Frequently Asked Questions
What is Skin Rejuvenation?
As an effect of ageing, somatic cells in the body lose their ability to divide and the total number of these cells gradually diminishes. This reduction in the number of cells of the epidermis and the dermis results in the skin losing its tone and elasticity which leads to the appearance of wrinkles.
These changes may be due to internal factors such as increase in age, a decline in the body’s rate of metabolism and various genetic factors like hormonal imbalances and congenital skin changes. They may also be due to external factors like climate, environmental exposure, diet, and others, which may cause an accumulation of harmful elements in the human body.
Skin rejuvenation is a way to reverse the effects of aging by inducing controlled wounds on the skin, prompting it to heal itself by creating new cells. This is done by the use of lasers, the Etherea IPL-sq, radiofrequency, other thermal methods or photodynamic therapy.
What are the available options for Skin Rejuvenation?
There are three basic categories of devices that can be used for skin rejuvenation – Laser, Intense Pulsed Light, and Radiofrequency. Although different technologies are utilised in each of these devices, using completely different methods and producing different after-treatment effects, the end results are all the same – the production of new skin cells by the body to replace old ones.
For instance, non-ablative lasers like the Pastelle and intense pulsed light systems like the Etherea utilises specific wavelengths that target deeper tissue to induce heating and the stimulation of collagen. This in turn improves the foundation under the superficial layers of the skin and induces a tighter and fuller look, getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. Ablative lasers like the Fraxis work more superficially, treating the epidermis and eliciting the production of new epidermal cells.
Radiofrequency (RF) devices such as the Secret RF may be used to achieve both effects. A bi-polar fractional hand piece can mimic the effect of an ablative laser to the epidermis, but does so in a more controlled manner, often called a sub-ablative effect.
Newer devices like the Secret RF utilise the combination of radiofrequency and micro needling to deliver heat more precisely to a specified depth of the skin, at the same time avoiding any thermal damage to the epidermis. This thermal effect induces skin regeneration by collagen and elastin proliferation in the dermis, eventually remodeling this layer and resulting in new, tight and supple skin over a number of weeks.
Micro Derma Needling
Micro Derma Needling treatments are good for men and women of all ages and all skin types. Micro Derma Needling is a valuable skin care procedure when used alone, or in combination with other procedures.
Is the procedure new?
Micro Derma Needling has been used successfully for years in Europe and is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in this country. Our office uses the ExcellaDerm Micro Derma Needling System because of its quality, dependability and results.
What is Micro Derma Needling?
Micro Derma Needling is a non-invasive exfoliating procedure performed individually or in a series for revitalizing and maintaining the skin’s appearance and smoothness. It can be used to address problem areas on the face or body. One session generally takes 30 minutes or so. There is no special preparation before the visit nor any recuperation after.
How does it work?
A precise stream of very fine crystals is directed through the ExcellaDerm hand piece onto the skin to loosen the layer of dead skin cells that form on the surface. It then suctions away from both the skin debris and crystal to reveal fresh invigorated skin. Typically, only the uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is removed. This is why there is minimal discomfort and virtually no recuperation. In select cases, however, a more aggressive abrasion may be chosen and appropriate aftercare will be discussed.
What results can I expect?
Patients have been thrilled with the effect ExcellaDerm Micro Derma Needling procedure has on:
- Improving dull or uneven skin color
- Relieving clogged pores and blackheads
- Softening general roughness or thickened patches of dead skin (e.g., elbows, feet.)
- Refining the appearance of fine, crepey lines, large pores, acne, and hyper pigmentation
- Removing surface debris allows the skin to better absorb topical medications
- Increasing circulation for a natural glow
- The overall youthful appearance of their skin
- Does this replace other procedures?
Micro Derma Needling is a valuable skin care tool in and of itself but does not take the place of either surgical procedures or therapeutic skin care products. Micro Derma Needling is an excellent adjunct to other procedures.
Are there any side effects?
The procedure may impact a slight redness to the skin but this will subside within a few hours. Although uncommon, some patients may experience blushing o the skin from increased blood flow, which will generally fade gradually over a day or two.
Is Micro Derma Needling for everyone?
Almost everyone could benefit from Micro Derma Needling, except patients who are taking certain acne medications or certain skin disorders. Please make us aware of any conditions that you may have.
